"Reflections" (After Picasso and van Gogh), mosaic work by Nkumba University students

Reflections of the future of art in the region is a subject of this amazing mosaic work done by a group of Nkumba University art students. Art is becoming another potent tool to actively engage the community. making his work known on one hand, but also serves as 'returning the favour' for a European artist that was greatly inspired by Africa's art and life. van Gogh's 'Sunflowers' are also used to inspire a part of the composition. The inspiration of the famous Picasso work  'Girl looking at mirror' offers a great possibility in 'Africanising Picasso' and making his work known as a powerful motif  to a local African communtiy on one hand, but also serves as 'returning the favour' for a European who was inspired by African art and life. This work is a greatly optimistic work which offers the viewers an invitation to study and further discover the hidden gems within Nkumba University.

Mosaic art project at the entrance of the SCIAD Gallery of Nkimba University

Am excited that finally something that is bold and different is happening at SCIAD. Sleepers awakening in 2014. Inspiration is being drawn from 3 works by Picasso, Botticelli and van Gogh. There is nothing new in the world, but only in  context. I can not wait to see what comes out of this work.
